HRS Humidifiers

I've got a ton of rapidograph/leroy/staedtler pens that I've acquired off eBay and I have a constant problem with skipping or general dysfunction of the pens. I accept that I am working with mostly used pens and the previous owners may have altered or abused or broken the parts through misuse or overuse. I also acknowledge that I am working with 40-50+ year old materials and nothing lasts forever despite the level or love and care and cleaning I work into these things. Plus there's the ink and there some unknowns there. My point is I get it, there may be nothing to do here and that is fine.

I keep seeing these things called HRS Humidifiers, which appears to be a revolving stand for the pens with a wet sponge in the bottom to keep the points wet and working between uses. I like the idea of it, but the stores that still carry them and eBay people want more coin out of me that I am interested in spending on a whim that may not work as prescribed.

My questions to the masses is (a) Do they actually work and get the ink flowing with the humidity? (b) Does the sponge at the bottom touch the pen tips or just keep the airspace moist? (c) Am I better off just using the pens once and cleaning them instantly rather than letting them sit for a couple of days and hoping for the best? (I know what I *should* be doing, but is 2 days of sitting around on their side really hurting them?)

I ask because I am thinking of making a DIY setup using 3d printed parts and constructing my own humidifier. I have seen diagrams of the existing ones so it doesn't seem that difficult, just I don't know if resting the pens in the sponge or dangling them over the sponge is the intent of the device.
