Made a small Chrome extension that shows if the video you're watching is actually HDR
Kept running into this thing where I'd be watching something on YouTube marked "4K HDR" and honestly couldn't tell if it was really HDR or just SDR content that got tagged/upscaled. So I put together a tiny extension that reads the video's actual decoded color info and shows a small badge on the toolbar icon — HDR10, HLG, HDR, or SDR — while it's playing.
It's not fancy, just checks the real color transfer function of the frame instead of guessing from resolution or file name.
A couple of honest caveats:
- It doesn't work on DRM-protected streams (Netflix, Disney+, Prime Video, etc.) — those block scripts from reading video frames on purpose, so there's no getting around that.
- It does work on YouTube, Vimeo, direct video files, and most non-DRM sites.
- It's not on the Web Store yet (just an unpacked extension for now), so installing it means turning on Developer Mode in Chrome — instructions are in the README.
It's free, open source (MIT), and I'd genuinely appreciate feedback or bug reports if you try it on a site where it doesn't detect right.
