Linux is great, but this thing needs to be addressed
The thing being major regression bugs being introduced in almost every recent software release.
Couple examples:
nvidia driver 595 -> 610: straight up 50 fps less in Forza horizon 6, stutters and crashes happening in many games.
kernel 7.0 -> 7.1: again major bugs - nvidia xid 79, page flip error straight up sending your system to the shadow realm.
Proton GE 11.2 -> 11.3: this one introduced a bug for Black Desert (which is mature dx11 game) that straight up breaks the game on launch and switching to different proton doesn’t even help and reinstall is needed.
KDE 6.6 -> 6.7: after update and reboot shell didn’t start and you had to manually start it from tty. Not that serious for experienced users but for newbies it’s not that straightforward.
You can say I was unlucky but the truth is if we want linux to have more 4% market share these kind of regressions are unacceptable. There doesn’t seem to be any kid of quality control going on, with current testers being the arch users.
There is simply no way for your average user to know how to debug these kind of issues. At first though I bricked my gpu with screen going black and fans spinning up to 100%. But nope, just a random thing that got introduced in 7.1 kernel. What’s more funny is 7.1-rc run super smoothly, then in main release this happens.
Whether it’s because the rise of vibe coding or something else it doesn’t seem I’ll be getting rid of snapper any soon.
