Is $35/hr too much to ask for?
Ive been working for a General Contractor for about 10 years. in the past 3 years he hasnt given me a raise. His company is very small (him and I where im the helper and do most of the physical work). At lunch a few days ago i asked him for a raise to which his response was, "what makes you think you deserve more money?"
I explained that its not "extra money" but paying a live able wage because the economy is down, groceries and gas are up and that the value of the american dollar is down so youre actually paying me less than you were 3 years ago.
he responded, "its because of you that im losing 20% profit" (he said this because i told him I want fridays off indefinitely because he was being quite the asshole and i started to dislike working with him). But i told him that thats his fault for not filling in that labor gap because its his business.
So he asked for my proposal. theres more that was spoken over but im leaving the rest of the convo out for sake of not writing a dissertation (unless some of you want to know what stupid questions he asked me next)
Im feeling like $35/hr should suffice considering the trades i do (masonry, demo, framing, insulation, sheetrock, spackle, carpentry/trim, flooring, tiling, painting). by my calculations, in getting paid $22.60/hr
