Do I need to share how I’m feeling with my boyfriend?
Hi everyone, counterproductive title I know but hear me out.
I (22F) have been dating my boyfriend (26M) for just over 2 months, though talking for awhile before.
I am Canadian, he is Australian. I’ve lived in a small Australian town for 3yr and just moved to his city for school 1 month ago.
Everything lined up perfectly with my move (it was the plan prior to meeting him), we clicked so well and so far everything has been great. He is nothing but amazing, he’s very supportive and kind and for once I’m not in a cycle of toxic arguments for attention or to “feel something”. Genuinely this whole thing has been so easy. He is honestly the boyfriend every girl dreams of having.
Here is the situation;
Since moving to the city I have been hit over and over again with curveballs. The friends I thought I had? Dropped off since I stopped hanging around the general hangout area (a techno club, I can’t afford to be there every weekend financially and mentally lol). School? I was told it was a few classes a week, now it’s full time 8 hours 4 days a week which really messes up my schedule, and don’t even get me started on my imposter syndrome - I don’t know if I even want to work in that sector/have what it takes. Work? God, it’s terrible out here, I have what I would say is a pretty valuable resume, amazing references, and a good portfolio, can’t seem to find work at all. I’m homesick but don’t want to actually go to Canada. Truth be told, I feel entirely lost, I can truly say I have never felt like this before. I’m very very glad I have him, but my personal and independent life is quite literally a mess.
I tend to keep to myself a lot and am VERY independent. I moved internationally by myself at 19 and had nobody to rely on so I’ve learnt to handle it all myself. My family is like that too. Him on the other hand, him and his family are a very openly affectionate and supportive type. He encourages me to open up and has been very patient which I am very grateful for.
I’ve began opening up more to him lately and he is aware of how I’m feeling in general, but it’s a lot worse than what he thinks. He doesn’t know I’m 2-4 weeks away from being entirely broke and can’t pay rent/support myself (he is in school too & working part time so can’t help out - not that I want him to or expect him to anyways trust me. Plus, he is a bit financially unstable to be honest). He doesn’t know how genuinely depressed I feel, to a point I have been thinking about taking my life. I’m not at all tipping point yet, but I have multiple different ideas and plans and it gets worse by the day. Last night he stayed over and I excused myself to the bathroom before he fell asleep, curled up in the bathtub and cried myself to sleep.
Thing is, since I’ve opened up more and more I feel more comfortable to be open with my emotions and I haven’t been in the greatest mood around him. Not like I’m upset and rude, but just alot of tears. He just thinks I’m overly emotional, but he doesn’t know the core of it. I do not want to overwhelm him emotionally as he has his own issues too, and I do NOT want to unload all of this to him and come across as I’m not who I said I was or I’m “too much”. This is not his burden, I do not want to put this on him.
I have never been in a relationship like this before, let alone in general. I need support right now, but I can’t realistically go to the professional help I need. I also know this is way too much to expect him to help me with.
I’m not expecting him to solve it all for me, I’m not expecting him to drop everything and plan my life and hold my hand, I want to do that myself and pick myself back up.
I guess I am just lost, I’m not sure if this is something that should be shared or if I should just keep it to myself until I have it sorted out.
Truthfully, he knows something is up and has told me he will let me tell him on my own terms. He asks everyday but I shut down emotionally and cannot speak. He respects that and tells me he is there when I am ready.
Sorry for the heavy topic, I would just love advice on what the best course of action would be.
TLDR: I am in a new relationship and depressed, it is taking a bad turn and I am unsure if this is something I should talk about with him. I want to, but I do not want to burden him.
