Is worth disclosing our profession ?

Educational

Hi guys, I’ve just started my FY1 and I’m genuinely wondering whether it’s even worth mentioning to new acquaintances, mates outside of work, or neighbours that I’m a doctor.

Recently, I read a shocking story on a subreddit I think it was about a paramedic and a doctor whose online mate unfortunately reported that they were going to harm themselves. They called the emergency services and police and did everything properly, but the family now blames them for everything and even referred them to their professional bodies. I also remember reading a Facebook post by a female doctor who reported something to social services as a member of public and accidentally signed off as 'Dr' in her email. A year later, social services tried to blame her for not providing more info as a doctor, claiming she had a professional duty of care. Obviously, all of them were completely blameless.

It just makes me wonder why is that? Is it even worth mentioning what we do, and why on earth does the public expect us to be on call 24/7?
