Looking for mature, non-childish anime recommendations (cinephile starting out)

I’ve always been a huge cinephile-watched tons of movies across every genre (thrillers, dramas, historicals, sci-fi, arthouse, etc.). Planning to properly get into anime now, but I want to start with stuff that has real depth( strong storytelling, complex characters, solid world-building, mature themes/plots). Not looking for anything that feels too childish, cartoonish.Open to any genre as long as it feels sophisticated and adult-oriented -psychological, historical, dystopian, dark fantasy, crime, etc.What are some anime that made you (as adults/movie lovers) actually fall in love with the medium? Looking for recommendations that hold up next to good live-action cinema in terms of writing and emotional weight.
