How can I put my thin hair up without using elastics?

I have long, thin hair. I used to put it up in a ponytail or messy bun using a ponytail holder or scrunchie. But I eventually noticed that my ponytail was getting thinner, and I had a lot of short, broken hairs.

2 years ago, I stopped using elastics and started twisting my hair and using plastic hair clips/claws. My broken hair has grown in, which is good, but I don't really like the way it looks in clips.

Ideas?
