How do human beings discovered that there is a time difference between various continents/countries before the internet or flights or ships?

Basically the title. If a journey between two countries took over months in a boat or ship, how did all human beings come to the arrive at the concept of time difference between different continents on the earth(especially at a time when earth was believed to be flat)? How did they agree on the exact time difference between countries?
