How to stop myself from translating in my head?

Discussion

I’ve been learning my (TL)for almost a year and I still can’t help but translate everything word for word in my head and it slows me down so much. I have very few words like what, omg, no way, genuinely probably not more than 20 words that I don’t instinctively translate from English into my TL. Idek how to stop myself from doing it. Even when I try and form a sentence I’m always thinking what I’m trying to say in English and then translating it and trying to find the right words. I try and connect words but I just feel like it doesn’t stick. Also it’s easier for me to not translate words if they have emotion for example “what” in my TL I don’t translate bc it’s like “what!!??” In my head idk there is an emotion in my brain connected with the word like confusion or shock. But with most words especially ones like get, do, was, etc it’s so hard to not translate.

How do I stop this habit how do I just think in my TL? I’ll never be able to have a conversation like this even after a year I still can’t hold a conversation for more than 10 seconds.

I probably don’t consume enough content in my TL but it’s hard as it’s not super widely spoken. If I listen to the news or watch big brother in my TL even though it’s more advanced will it still help me fill gaps and learn words. Or should I stick with kid shows? Any suggestions on input/ content would be super helpful too!

Please help! Any advice is super appreciated or any stories of how you overcame it so I can see the light at the end of the tunnel
