As an electronics & mechanical hobby engineer, I moved from pre-built factory quads to a fully self-assembled HGLRC Nblade MAX night blade 5-inch DC frame, and I’d like to share my build, component selection reasoning, flight performance, and modification tweaks for anyone into cinematic freestyle FPV.

# Frame & Mechanical Design Choices

I picked the DC offset X layout (221.5mm wheelbase) over standard plus-X for shooting priority. The offset arm geometry drastically reduces prop blade occlusion on the camera lens, which is a non-negotiable advantage for smooth cinematic shots.

* Material: 3K full carbon fiber main plates, integrated RGB programmable LED strips along each arm for night flight visibility and aesthetic customization. The red CNC cutouts on the bottom chassis aren’t just cosmetic—they reduce overall airframe weight without sacrificing torsional rigidity during high-G flips.
* Hardware layout: Standard 20×20 stack mounting hole spacing, reserved dual antenna mounting ports for diversity VTX setup, bottom-mounted battery bay with silicone strap fastening. The built-in GPS mount enables failsafe return-to-home, critical for long-range landscape filming.

# Flight Controller & Power Stack (Performance-Oriented Configuration)

Core flight control logic relies on STM32H743 FC, which was my primary reason for this build: the H7 core delivers far higher loop frequency and processing bandwidth compared to F4 series controllers, eliminating lag during aggressive freestyle maneuvers and precise slow cinematic tracking.

* ESC: 6S capable high current 4-in-1 ESC, matched to 5-inch prop torque demand; sufficient headroom for hard throttle punch without voltage sag.
* Power system: Entire rig calibrated for 6S LiHV battery, optimized weight-to-thrust ratio for both slow smooth aerial footage and violent freestyle tricks.
* Receiver: ELRS compatible footprint, easy solder integration for long-range radio link.

# VTX & Camera Setup

I opted for the DJI O4 Pro digital FPV system instead of analog VTX for post-production ready footage. Dual mushroom antenna configuration maximizes signal penetration and anti-interference when flying behind trees or buildings. The factory red camera guard was retained with minor sanding modification to eliminate micro-vibration that causes jello in footage.

# Tuning & Flight Experience (Engineer’s objective assessment)

1. Rigid carbon frame suppresses arm vibration well; minimal filter tuning required to clear jello artifacts in video feed.
2. H7 flight controller’s fast computation lets me run higher P-gains without oscillation—snappy yet predictable handling for both flowy cinematic orbits and freestyle rolls/flips.
3. RGB arm LEDs offer tangible safety value for low-light flights, easy color/animation programming via FC software.
4. Built-in GPS RTH function acts as a reliable safety backup, especially when flying out of visual line of sight for landscape shooting.

# Minor drawbacks I addressed during self-build

* Stock cable routing left minor airflow obstruction; I re-routed all power/signal wires with custom cable ties and heat shrink to improve cooling for ESC and VTX.
* OEM battery strap had slight stretch over repeated use; swapped for reinforced woven straps to prevent battery shift under high throttle loads.

# Final thoughts

This self-assembled Nblade MAX hits my dual-use requirement perfectly: capable of stable professional aerial cinematography while retaining the raw power and agility of a dedicated freestyle 5-inch quad. If you’re an engineer or builder balancing filming and stunt flight, the DC layout HGLRC Nblade series is absolutely worth the time to build from scratch rather than buying pre-configured kits.
