21F - Throat Infection? Persisting 16+ Days
21F (relevant PMHx below). I get recurrent throat infections quite frequently. I’ve had antibiotics ~4+ times so far this year, which have generally been effective besides one course.
Current symptoms began on 26/07 and have been fluctuating since. I had an initial fever of >38°C on the first day, which recurred on days 8 and 10. Symptoms have included: red/inflamed throat and pain when swallowing, swelling/tenderness under tongue and beneath jaw (sublingual/submandibular areas), palpable and tender upper cervical lymph nodes, frequent headaches, multiple tongue ulcers, inflamed/swollen uvula.
Pain tends to dissipate o/n but routinely returns, with the main area of pain constantly changing. e.g. pain under L) side jaw and tongue today, but whole throat yesterday.
Symptoms have now lasted 16+ days. There was some initial improvement, but now it’s persisting without further improvement.
I’m reluctant to start antibiotics unless I have to, as I have had several courses this year and have frequently needed to take them in previous years.
What are the chances of this progressing into something more serious without antibiotics? Is it reasonable to try rely on my own immune system and continue monitoring, or does the duration/persistence require a GP assessment?
