‘Read another book’ (even ignoring the context it’s usually used in) is starting to feel like it’s being used instead of actually having to explain why comparing a real life incident to a piece of media can come off as tasteless.

General

Look, I’m pretty well aware of the context it’s usually used in (especially regarding a certain franchise,) but I’m starting to feel like people are using it to wave away explaining stuff and are using it to pat themselves on the back.

Yes, there’s a time and place for things like this, and it can definitely come off as entitled in some cases (like that whole cable moving thing,) but repeatedly regurgitating the same contrived phrase instead of explaining why this stuff can be offensive to those who have experienced horrors like what’s being talked about (like comparing a fictional fascist regime to a real life one) just feels like it does nothing in the long run but be used as an excuse for actual action.
