Looking for a used ADV bike – mostly road, long trips, some easy off-road
Hi everyone,
I’m looking for some advice on buying a used ADV bike.
My use would be roughly 90% road / 10% off-road. The off-road part would be mostly unpaved roads and easy trails — nothing technical. On the road, however, I do quite a lot of long-distance riding, including trips of 2,000–3,000 km, with many hours on the motorway.
I’m looking for a bike that can comfortably handle:
- Long motorway days
- Two-up riding
- Luggage/panniers
- Long-distance touring
- Some easy off-road
- And, most importantly, reliability
I’m coming from a bike that has been in the family for years: my father’s Suzuki Intruder 1500. I absolutely love that bike, but unfortunately it no longer fits the way I ride. It’s great in many ways, but it isn’t the right tool for the kind of long-distance and mixed riding I want to do now.
After looking at the used market and considering my requirements and budget, I’ve narrowed it down to these:
- Triumph Tiger 800 — 2018/2019
- Honda Africa Twin — 2016/2017
- Yamaha Super Ténéré 1200 — 2016/2017
- Triumph Explorer 1200 — 2015/2016
- Honda Transalp 750 — 2023
- Yamaha Ténéré 700 — 2021/2022
I know these are quite different bikes, which is partly why I’m asking here.
For my particular use, which one would you choose and why? I’m especially interested in real-world ownership experience: reliability, comfort after several hours on the motorway, two-up touring, fuel range, maintenance costs, luggage capacity, and how they behave on easy dirt roads.
Also, am I overlooking any bikes that should be on this list? I’m open to other suggestions if there’s something that fits my use better.
Thanks!
