How to practice touch typing without your speed falling apart?

Nobody warns you about this when you start trying to fix your typing habits, but your speed is going to drop and it's going to feel terrible and you're going to want to go back to however you were typing before.

I went through this and it wasn't the best experience. I was typing around 45 WPM with four fingers and decent accuracy. I wanted to actually learn proper touch typing so I could stop looking at the keyboard. The first two weeks with the new hand position I dropped to maybe 20 WPM and made way more errors. Everything felt wrong. Accepting that the slowdown is temporary and genuinely necessary made it less stressful. You can't rewire a motor habit while also trying to maintain performance on that same habit. The brain needs the slower pace to build the new patterns.

What actually helped: short sessions rather than marathons, keeping the same hand position even when it felt painfully slow, and not mixing methods. No going back to the old way "just for this one email."
