What's the difference between the regular doctrine tracks and the "skill tree" tracks?

Hi, I'm somewhat new to the game and I keep seeing screenshots and videos where people seem to have a "skill tree" type doctrine screen, but when I play I have the "choose a doctrine and gain mastery to upgrade it" doctrine screen, and no matter whether I have DLC enabled or disabled there isn't anything that seems to swap it. Does anyone know what's going on?
