Is the Republic good at keeping its citizens safe?
A question indeed that has been on my mind for quite a while. I’m gonna split my argument into a few individual parts so if you’re going to respond it’ll be easier. Personally I feel the republic really really sucked on this one. Extremely.
So the first thing is obviously the terrorist group that killed all of Lyrias family. Obviously Kavax came in to fight, but I feel that kind of shows the opposite to what it should. The Republic is aware and knows about terrorist groups but they didn’t attack the main cause? They have some of the most advanced tech and it’s shown that the terrorist groups are attacking citizens. I don’t see why this wouldn’t be a priority for the Republic. I don’t remember if it’s explained why the Red Hand is so hard to find, or why the Republic can’t do anything about it.
Second would be the syndicates. How is it that Sevro can take down a few dukes in a matter of days, but the entire Republic did almost nothing for a decade. Please point out if I’m wrong, but the Duke of hands managed to have a safe house, a ship, and priceless artifacts all in Republic territory. How can they not see any of this? It’s stated they knew the syndicates were a problem, so why regard for them?
Third is present decision making. The entirety of iron gold and dark age is focused solely around the “vote” which is war based. There is barely any talks of the senate or sovereign wanting to center in on safety for the citizens of the Republic. Mustang acknowledges how she, the sovereign, failed at her job to keep citizens like Lyria safe. It was a great moment and all…but what exactly changed besides Sevro locking in? Is it even mentioned that she’d have another plan?
Those are pretty much the three things that come to mind for this. This isn’t to say that a newly formed Republic is easy and fast paced, but to the surface…it doesn’t even look like they’re trying to help the people! Lyria’s first moments in Hyperion at night is her almost immediately getting raped. It just seems like the senate doesn’t care at all.
