Data Centers have greatly worsened my Tinnitus
21F, I developed tinnitus when I was 12 from years of drumming with earbuds in at full volume. Since then i’ve had a manageable level of ringing that definitely has its flares, but for the most part I’ve gotten used to it seeing as I developed it at such a young age. Up until now it was more or less integrated as something i can mostly forget about, like breathing. Despite that though, I’m still a musician in my off time, so maintaining my hearing has always been imperative for me. For nearly four years I’ve worked as an overnight security officer in various facilities, so being a creature of the night has certainly aided in being away from noise in general. That being said, four months ago I switched to another security job that was described as much less intensive for much higher pay. Getting this job seemed like a blessing, seeing as I’m more or less the bread winner between me and my roommate, whos struggling with the job market like many others tend to be these days. When I applied they refused to tell me who I was contracted to be working for, or where the location was. I only realized I had signed up to work for a data center the day I walked in. As you’ve probably seen online, when fully up and running these places sound like mini jet engines, but the building I was contracted to work in has only been 75% of the way built. So its more or less a normal building, at least for now. 2 days of the week I SOC, or dispatch, but the other 3 days I patrol. When patrolling the 2nd and 3rd stories (where they keep the big ass dystopian supercomputers) you can hear the loud hum leaking through the thick concrete walls, and when the workers open the door to the supercomputer rooms, it legitimately sounds like hell in there. This has been fine, because the hum of the hallways is similar to your typical whitenoise. My problem is the brain dead workers, who refuse to properly badge in with their fingerprints and code, as well as properly close the door behind them. Since the facility is only 75% operational, the doors dont lock like they should if it were fully operational, so while you’re still supposed to badge in every door, you can just tailgate your buddy or open them like normal without having to wait the 5 seconds it takes to fingerprint and type in your code. When doing that though, the alarm system will go off. These are 24/7 facilities, meaning there are still several workers overnight, and every single time they dont badge in properly, tailgate or leave a door half-closed, an insufferably loud ring blares through the entire level until the door is closed or the dispatcher acknowledges the alarm on the panel via their computer. We have about 500 alarms a night. Part of my job as a patrol is to investigate every single alarm on every single floor, and secure the door. Meaning I have to hear this alarm constantly throughout the night. I cant wear ear proper ear protection because I need to hear my radio and my surroundings. Now after only four months, my tinnitus has reached the point where like many of you, I am constantly aware of it. Its increased twice as loud, and the flares are twice as worse. I’m very worried seeing as this job is the make or break of whether or not my household can stay above water. Every other job pays much much less (if you’re lucky enough to even get a response) and with all my expenses I literally cannot afford anything else. I cant switch to dispatching full time because all of those positions are taken at a cut-throat level. The building should be fully operational within the next couple months, and I don’t wanna think about how loud it will be then once all the engines are up and running. I wish I had a different job, I wish workers followed the dozens of signs plastered all over the walls to please open/close the doors properly and wear hearing protection. Im at the point where Im going to have to wear earbuds daily outside of work and be extra cautious with volume when doing my music work. Just making this post in my completely quiet room at 10pm, for the first time the ringing is causing me to have trouble thinking and making it hard to type this out, like a flare up would do previously. Fair to say i’m extremely disheartened. I hope everyone else reading this is managing with their pain.
