How to convince my son not to buy luxury chess set

META

I plays chess A LOT. I've played most of my life, but recently has really gotten into it. I used to own a nice set, but through the years no longer have it.

My son I looking at buying a nice set for me. $1000-1500 for the full set/board is his budget, as I came to know about it.

As time has went by, I've lost interest in materialistic things. On the other hand, my medical debt has racked up a lot. I would appreciate more if the money goes towards paying that down, rather than on a single dumb ducking chess board. How do I ask my son for that?

Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
