Baking topsoil for substrate mix

How necessary is it to bake the topsoil for doing a sand and soil mix? I’ve seen plenty of people say they never have but just as many people saying you need to, I’m just worried about ruining my oven or having like a smell that won’t go away. Anybody who’s done this know if there will be a lingering smell afterwards?
