AIO I almost drowned (my own fault) but my partner didn’t warn me
I almost drowned in a riptide. I was swimming at the beach w friends and partner. 4 of us were playing in the waves and wanted to play in the “calmer” waves, not so much the white crashing waves. I later learned that the “calmer” waves are indicative of a rip current and you’re better off playing in the white crashing waves. Well, my partner has lived by the beach her whole life and had a gut feeling to move closer to shore. She told us, “let’s move over there” and swam away. The other 2 didn’t hear her and I genuinely thought it was a preference thing rather than a safety thing bc she mentioned she likes just sitting on the sand and letting the waves crash over her. So, I stayed behind with the water slightly below shoulder height with our 2 friends. A few waves later and I realize we’ve drifted out really far and can’t touch the floor anymore. I struggle to swim forward and I’m not getting any closer to the beach. It was scary and serious for a minute and I had to lock in to not swallow water or exhaust myself, luckily a lifeguard was right there ready to pull us out, and he had to go in and save another couple that got pulled even further.
It’s literally no one’s fault but my own. I was overconfident and ignorant, I genuinely had no idea I was putting myself in serious danger and now I know. I got back to my partner and she was saying she thought we had to get rescued by the lifeguard, and also that if it ever happens again just wait out 12 waves to a set and swim parallel to the shore.
2 days later I’m thinking about it and I realize, hey did she know this was gonna be a rip current? So I talk to her and confirm it was p much a gut instinct she had, more subconscious and by her own set of rules she stays swimming where she knows she’s safe; she said she told us to move. I tell her, next time we should be more clear with each other if there’s a safety element involved bc I thought it was a preference thing (cuz she does lowkey go off on her own all the time, I thought she was just leaving me behind to do her own thing). Then she got defensive and said that she wasn’t trying to trick me into drowning. I told her of course, that’s not what I meant but the situation was just scary af and I need to be more careful and also look out for others in case they’re unaware too.
That was the end of the convo but her response just rlly rubbed me the wrong way. The situation isn’t her fault at all, and now we both know better abt how to look after each other and ourselves. But I feel weird that she would’ve just let me die of my own ignorance without rlly saying anything, like as my partner. And she got so irritated and defensive, if it was me I would’ve said “oh yeah my bad I should’ve warned you” but her immediate reaction was so petty. I’m overthinking it and taking it personal now, do I just let it go?
