(Self-Promotion) I built a language learning app for myself and my girlfriend orginally. Thought I would expand on it and make it public.
Hey all, long time lurker, first time posting something like this. Mods, feel free to remove if this breaks a rule I missed, no hard feelings.
I've spent the last while building Nekolingo, a language learning app. Mostly because I kept bouncing off existing tools for one reason or another. Either the spaced repetition felt dumb (same interval no matter how badly I actually knew a word), or the "practice conversations" were just a chatbot with no memory of anything I'd already learned.
What I ended up building:
- Spaced repetition that actually tracks per-word difficulty (SM-2 based), so words I keep missing come back sooner and words I know cold stop wasting my time
- A tutor you can actually chat with in your target language. It corrects your mistakes as you go and lets you save the words you got wrong straight into your review queue, so a conversation isn't just a one-off, it feeds back into what you're studying
- Lots of different practice modes.
- A Chrome extension for YouTube so you can save unfamiliar words while watching real content instead of switching over to a separate flashcard app. (and any text on the internet)
- Short stories generated from your own vocabulary so what you're reading is always right at your level instead of some generic graded reader
- Courses for a decent spread of languages.
- A Currated list of the top 10k Words in 8+ languages.
- Book importing and a live reader.
I'm not trying to dunk on Duolingo, Anki, etc. I think most of these tools are good at something, I just wanted the parts I cared about (retention, real conversation, real content) working together instead of stitched across four different apps.
It's free to use. Would genuinely love this community's take. You all are the most demanding audience for this stuff, and I'd rather hear "this doesn't actually solve anything" now than after I've sunk more months into it.
