AITAH for ending my friendship
I (f 23) am friends with Kelly (22). I have known Kelly for three or four years, having met in college. She went away and went away to a different college for classes not offered in her degree.
About a year or so ago, one of her family had some medical issues that put a damper on our initial get togethers. When we would try to get together, they would cancel last minute after this, but I was considerate; medical issues happen, etc. The issue began where they did not tell me stuff and we would plan stuff together with her brother Chris (23) or just by ourselves. Kelly would agree to outings then cancel right as I asked her if we were all good to go about a week or so before we went anywhere. I kept forgiving this, believing she would talk to me, but she wouldn't really tell me anything through text. if I asked then it was usually very vague answers. At any time, she could have told me that she was extremely busy and we would have put a hold until she was all good; the issue was that she kept agreeing to these outings knowing her schedule was (what I later found out) was uncertain due to family, school, work, etc.
I don't know where Kelly or Chris live. In the three to four years, I have known them they dodge the question to some degree. They can come by and drop off gifts or other things, but I can't do the same. I find this unfair since when we go out, they get dropped off at my house or I have to meet them at a parking lot or park nearby.
With a year of her not telling me stuff through text, the lack of me really chatting with her in person due to cancelations I finally said something. I explained all this to her, and we talked out the initial schedule she has, and I thought we made good progress; I did not want our friendship to end, but I felt like we had drifted apart due to these issues. I initially proposed that we didn't do outings until she got back into a normal, less busy schedule and she took the text as I didn't want to be friends anymore, but I wanted things to try to regain trust and maybe grow past this. I asked about one more small outing to do in town, and Chris was the only one who replied.
Cut to me disappearing and not answering text for three days both because I was hurt that it went back to the same way it had been before. Kelly was not pleased nor was Chris in this matter. I told Kelly through call that I think we should end our friendship because I did not feel anything anymore and I don't think I can forgive her for her miscommunication for over a year not only with the physical outings, but also with the fact she doesn't tell me things and I have to find out details through her brother through call or through text a few times. I told her all of this, hearing her talk about her busy schedule and her reasons. I said I can't get past the fact that if we were friends, she would have communicated this with me months ago instead of me yanking it out of her through this entire situation. She took accountability but was very deeply hurt that I decided to end the friendship, as she put " just because I am busy and I can't do things doesn't mean I am disposable and you can't do this to people and that she hopes I learn the lesson that people are not disposable".
She proceeded to get really upset that I am throwing three of four years away because I came out of nowhere with this since she did not know. As of right now, I have said my piece, and I am sitting here wondering if I am the asshole in this after telling her about the one-sidedness that formed through the three years that I initially forgave and the fact that at any time she could have said something and didn't. Am I the asshole?
