ABC, Fluent in speaking and listening however virtually no WRITING or READING proficiency. Can I self study AP CHINESE? If so, how?

Ni hao da jia! I am debating whether or not to take AP Chinese this year. As an American born Chinese, I have been speaking with my parents ever since I was a toddler, however my parents never taught me how to read and write in Chinese. I am already talking 8 APs this year but it is manageable for me. I’m just wondering if learning thousands of characters will take too long for me to master. My han yu ping ying is a moderate level fyi. Any tips from people who have already taken the test?
