Voice Amplifier for IEP meetings?
I am a school-based SLP currently dealing with voice issues (hoarseness, fatigue, muscle tension). I’m in voice therapy and am trying so hard to get better. I think I will be fine in my small group sessions. I work primarily with high needs kids, non-speaking, AAC, and they benefit from an adult that doesn’t raise their voice and is more soft spoken. However, I’m so worried about when I need to present in IEP meetings. A lot of times we’re in a big conference room, and even though there might not be that many people, with the space it’s like talking in front of a audience ( and sometimes I talk on and on especially if I’m explaining something to the parent/advocate). The stress of presenting also triggers the muscle tension. I’m looking into potentially using a personal voice amplifier. But I need honest feedback. Would this be strange if the SLP had to have a microphone on to amplify for a simple IEP meeting? I feel like I’m being overly cautious and also don’t want to be a pariah.
