What the f*&k stung/bit me? (Southwestern CT, USA)

Apologies if this isn't the place for this, but I wasn't sure.

(I would share pics of the sting/bite areas on my body, but there's nothing to see – no redness, no bumps, no swelling. Just lots of pain, even hours later.)

Was mountain biking earlier this evening when I suddenly got some sharp bites/stings from *something* on a few parts of my body. I've been stung by bees, wasps, yellow jackets, etc., and this does not feel like those.

This was around 5 hours ago, and the pain is still pretty severe (I'm not allergic, and my heart rate and breathing are totally normal – but the sting/bite areas are still burning in an intense and unfamiliar way).

This occurred while riding through a particularly swampy area, with lots of large rocks and standing water. It was a tricky section of trail, so I was going fairly slowly. The stings/bites happened very quickly – first one on my left ankle (through a sock), then higher up on that calf, then a few more on the right leg, then my right arm. It all took maybe 6-8 seconds. There were lots of mosquitos in this particular area, but these were *not* mosquito bites. There were no sounds of buzzing, and I didn't feel anything when swiping at them – they were like phantom stings. It was very strange.

The pain started off only mildly sharp, then almost went away for an hour or so, but now has been growing since. Any other stings I've ever experienced go the other way – start off intense, then fade – but these still feel awful.

Some sort of wasp? Hornet? Wtf.
