Which version to play? (Also tilesets??)

Hey. Been thinking of giving the game another shot. Mainly the ASCII version, and I heard that the latest (v52?) Doesn't support old tilesets, but that I can also use v47 for them to work.

What am I missing in terms of UX, if I go from 52 to 47, or are they almost identical?

Also in terms of tilesets, I found it quite confusing as there are tilesets of different types, and I don't know which one to choose. 12x12 for example. All I want I guess is to change the colorscheme, to make it easier on the eyes.
