Should I book train tickets in advance or buy on the spot?

Hi,

I'm coming to Italy in a couple of weeks and I'm wondering if I should purchase my train tickets now or wait to buy them at the train station.

I saw that I have a 10 minutes transfer in Rome too. So, I don't know how reliable trains Italy are, but I don't want to be stuck missing one train.
