On Gnosticism and the problem of evil
For reference, I'm not Christian, I just don't find the Gnostic traditions to address the 'problem of evil' properly, it actually presents a worse alternative than the abrahamic take. I'm not gonna write a whole essay, as I think it would be redundant. We all know that Gnostic traditions posit that evil exists due to the flawed creation of the Demiurge, Yaldabaoth, but the existence of a mythological pantheon of Aeons brings the argument back to square one, which is: 'Why don't the Aeons interfere and remove said evil, and why do they allow its existence in the first place?' If you were to see your younger brother hurt a cat, for example, you would stop them if that was not your intention. If your intention was to leave your younger brother to see if he would hurt said cat in order to test him, it would logically follow that you wouldn't interfere until after he has hurt said cat. Evil exists by design in Abrahamic faiths as a test, which is logically coherent as a system, independently of whether you believe in it or view it to be false as a whole or not.
In gnosticism, evil does not exist by design, but why let that exist in the first place? It even becomes stranger once you see how the Aeons do in fact interfere with the material world (eg. how they said to Yaldabaoth 'No, you are not, Saklas' after he claimed to be the only God) Even stranger was when after Sabaoth revolted against him, the Aeons sealed him in the 7th circle of Hades/Tartaros, so clearly they are able and do in fact interact with the world. In some traditions, there is a cosmic war between Yaldabaoth and the Aeons, and if Yaldabaoth is a flawed, weak creator, why do the Aeons struggle in said war? Why does evil continue to exist in that case, if it is not by design and is also not the will of the Aeons? Why do the Aeons interact and influence figures like Zostrianos and John and give them revelations of things to come and that have come, yet let that revelation be dominated by Yaldabaoth's creation? It is absolutely almost certainly so that the Aeons will for evil to exist, and that is the only logical way I can possibly view it, that only souls that are able to be enlightened are able to 'escape' by knowing their true essence, and those ignorant ones are doomed to a world of sin, similarly to abrahamic faiths. There is also the idea of the "Gnostic Resurrection"- if you can call it a resurrection- where Christ comes and fulfills everything else and 'defeats Yaldabaoth.' It really just reads as an esoteric denomination of Christianity (which it historically was,) and a dig against the Abrahamic God by the Copts, who were tired of being forced into a Hebrew religion, and thus compared their God to their donkey counterpart (Seth in Ancient Egyptian methology.)
It seems like it attempts to resolve an issue, yet seems to use the very theological foundations it was built upon (an evil satan who wreaks havoc, and is defeatable by God, yet is allowed to exist) leading to the same issue repeating. What do you guys think?
