My Experience

IM NEW HERE!

Prozac has been prescribed to members of my mother’s side for PPD and I was once on Prozac in my early 20s (now a 30yoF). I can’t recall much of my first time with Prozac , my BPD was at its most extreme (as I call it), during that time and I was going back and forth between meds. This past June I was finally diagnosed with OCD which came with a huge sigh of relief and understanding. I was then put back on Prozac. Started at 10 mg, then 20 mg, then 20 mg AM and 10 mg PM. The biggest thing I’ve noticed as problematic with this med, at this dosing for me, is that I black out when I drink. My psychiatrist did not warn me of this and it wasn’t until I found this reddit thread that I realized I’m dealing with a potential side effect. Feeling fine, if not great, off the first 3 drinks, not realizing how drunk you really are. And then immediately blacking out, no warning signs, nothing. Insanely scary for my family and friends. I’ve tapered back from drinking while I’ve noticed some cravings worsening almost (?). This last Thursday I woke up , and it’s like the meds were no longer working. My OCD and anxiety came back so hard, I thought I was going insane. It took me 4 hours to leave the house. I ended up doubling my morning dose. I took 40 mg instead of my typical 20 mg and OMG the relief I felt. I called my psychiatrists office, knowing he was unavailable till our next appointment in 2.5 weeks. His nurse and I spoke and while she couldn’t legally tell me to continue doubling my dose, she did. I have enough meds to get me through the appointment but I wanted to share my experience because no one’s personal Prozac experience is the same. I may need to switch meds entirely at some point but I’d rather adjust the med I’m on now first, especially given the potential side effects of other meds. So far, Prozac has been working amazingly, but if I have to keep increasing post plateau .. is it worth it? I would assume most SSRIs have a point of tolerance that is always of potential difficulty.
