Questions about my dads basal cell carcinoma diagnosis
My dad (58) was diagnosed with basal cell carcinoma on the tip of his ear recently. He grew up on farms, was in the military stationed in the desert in his 20s, hunted all his life, and has been a very outdoorsy, sporty guy- always in the sun. He wears sunscreen when he's at the beach and when he's playing sports, but not when he's doing yard work or on a daily basis. Were white but he's quite tan and I've never known him to be pale lol. I don't know how long the spot has been on his ear...at minimum 4 years and the last year it's been opening, weeping, and bleeding and wouldn't heal but he wouldn't see a derm.
I'm the complete opposite of him and have been going to the derm and religiously wearing sunscreen since I was 10 so I was fed up and scheduled an appointment for him. That was three weeks ago and he got a biopsy that came back a few days ago saying it was basal cell carcinoma. They removed a precancerous mole from his nose as well. They want to do mohs surgery and mentioned the possibility of radiation, but that's about all I know.
Could anyone explain to me what prognosis generally is with his background, the mole being on his ear long term before diagnosis, and how likely he is to get more skin cancer elsewhere on his body? I feel scared but I think right now it's because I don't really know what this means especially because he's always so chill in the face of things like this for my and my family's sake. My dad is my bestie and I'm worried about him and it would really help if someone could explain this a little to me.
