Parents are delusional about me getting a mortgage in med school

Rant/Vent

Im in my post undergraduate gap year before potentially starting med school. I accepted a pretty good job offer that, by next year, will seemingly give me enough money for a down payment on a house.

This is where my parents’ delusions come into place. They are telling me, not suggesting, that I WILL get a mortgage in whatever city I go to med school so that I can secure some form of property ownership as soon as possible. Keep in mind I have literally one med school interview and it is still way too early to say if i’ll go anywhere at all. Also, I won’t even be working during medical school. Where’s the money gonna come from??? Like come on bro think for 2 seconds. And no, student loans are not allowed to be used to pay for a mortgage, but they CAN pay for rent. Besides what company will give a mortgage to a guy w no job, and with a cosign my parents would be paying for it basically in full for 4 years. They’re generous but they’re not that generous like come on.

When I told them that I could very well do residency somewhere far away from this hypothetical property, they told me i’ll simply just become a remote landlord, or that they’ll become the landlords for me and collect rent remotely. Like bro i’m not the smartest guy when it comes to real estate but I think anyone could see that this is a terrible idea. Being a landlord isnt simply just getting venmo payments from tenants every month forever. And if this property is in Philly, Florida, CT, or like literally any of the other places I applied, theres NO WAY u could remotely manage a property from where we are from (hint: pretty far!!!). Or at the very least it would be extremely difficult. And besides, hiring a property manager for something like this would just kill your profit. Also, if I move for residency, that’s like two properties im paying for, the first “investment” and the place i’m living for residency.

They are convinced renting is like throwing money away. Like bro its not about that, there are genuine benefits given my situation.

Bottom line: i’m saying no and idc what they gotta say about it. I didnt bother arguing yet because theres no point, who knows if im even gonna get in. But its my money and my life and ngl im gonna have to say no here.

Anyways, has anyone else dealt with parents forcing outdated real estate advice on you before med school? How did you shut it down?
