Aren't flip flops annoying with the whole having something between your toes? Whats the appeal, when there are alternates?

I live in California and work in tech, but I never got the appeal of flip flops. Isn't it annoying to have something in between your toes? And insofar as grip goes, those slide on sandals also have grip depending on the sole and the texture, so thats not an advantage either.
