Direct Report Offered Higher Raise In Restructure
Long story short - I went on maternity leave, my associate-level direct report covered for me (senior manager) and they wanted a promotion when I returned. My boss (VP) agreed to a restructuring to accommodate a promotion for both myself and my direct report, however when the comp sheets came in, my direct report got a higher raise (a few thousand more, and percentage-wise, a 30% raise vs my 17%). They pushed HR to get my direct report to the higher end of the new role’s pay band (15k higher than entry), while my comp was only 5k higher than pay band entry. It feels inequitable since I spent years and years mentoring and patiently training the direct report to be what they are today, and my boss knows that. Feels shitty for them to go big on my direct report’s raise but not mine. I by no means want to be petty by negotiating via comparison, but is it worth at least a conversation to understand how they got to those numbers and try to negotiate 5-10k more for myself? Or just read between the lines/leave it be, get the title, and start finding another job that might value me more?
