What function/feature do I get by using my own e-sim?

What's the purpose of loading my own e-sim? Does that let me use the wifi hotspot without paying for the MINI Connect, or ??

Background - Google Fi gives me a free data SIM (on the T-Mobile network). Any value in putting that e-SIM into my MINI?
