Vyvanse treating treatment-resistant depression (and maybe adhd?)

Misc. Question

Hello, all. I’m just looking to get some advice or hear experiences. I am currently seeing medical professionals and I’ve shared these thoughts with them.

I’ve had depression for most of my life. I’ve been on many SSRIs and other normal meds for treating depression (Wellbutrin, sertraline, pristiq, lexapro). I found them to be mostly ineffective and/or the cause of an emotionless zombie like state.

During a conversation with my talk therapist, she suggested I consider an ADHD diagnosis knowing that my son has it. I had never considered it a possibility for myself, as I don’t think I have the typical symptoms and managed just fine in school. When I suggested this to her, she added that because I had done really well in school, she figured it was masked, potentially.

Then talking to my psychiatrist, he gave me the screen and I answered honestly. He suggested it was possible that I had ADHD, but it was certainly right on the border. Nevertheless, he suggested I try out Vyvanse for some time.

Vyvanse, to me, is the only medication that has ever made even a slight dent in my depression. I feel more capable, more open, more forgiving, and more positive than I have in years.

I do struggle a little bit with insomnia while on the medication, and I have found that the ends of days have been particularly hard - either reverting to a depressive state or irritable.

So my question is how should I feel here? Just because a medication works doesn’t mean it’s the right one, right? I’m worried the stimulant aspect is just sort of a trick to make me not depressed. Or like a junky feeling great while high, then crashing hard when it wears off. Like the end of the day is my true self. And I’m not sure about the idea of taking a stimulant for the rest of my life. I’ll say the insomnia and end of day crash are bad, but on the whole much better than the unending depression.

I’m just looking for thoughts. Does this resonate with anyone?
