Is Robinhood Really the Runt of the Trump-Backed Litter?

TL;DR Robinhood's Q2 2026 — the three months ended June 2026 — was, in a phrase, fine as expected, which is why short-term money left after the July 29 print. The trend underneath is more interesting: event contracts arrived just in time to fill the hole crypto left, funded-user growth accelerated, and net deposits set a record. This is still a high-beta business, but execution keeps improving.

Why the stock ran into the print

Three things stacked up. The $25,000 day-trading equity requirement was lifted on June 4. Robinhood was named to build the white-label front end and handle customer service for the government's child accounts programme. And June markets were hot — memory stocks, the SpaceX listing, a World Cup that gave event contracts their volume base. June operating data then beat sell-side expectations across equities, options and event contracts — everything except crypto.

User and asset growth actually accelerated

Excluding roughly 300,000 users acquired with the Canadian crypto platform, net new funded users reached 700,000 in Q2 2026 — faster than the prior quarter.

Net deposits were $21.7 billion, a record quarterly inflow — and quarterly net inflows have exceeded $10 billion for two and a half years without a break.

Event contracts filled the crypto hole exactly on time

Robinhood and Susquehanna formed a joint venture that bought 90% of Rothera's predecessor; because Rothera is a CFTC-licensed exchange and clearing house, Robinhood now holds exchange, clearing and broker licences in one loop. That lets it charge one cent per contract against a traditional two, with revenue per contract steady at 1.18 cents including clearing fees. Event contract revenue reached $156 million in Q2 2026 — second only to options, and above equities — offsetting a crypto trading decline of nearly 40% year over year.

The product cadence is genuinely fast

Also shipped: AI agent trading, where users connect their own agents through MCP into a dedicated sub-account — a usage hurdle that neatly sidesteps compliance exposure; crypto lending via Robinhood Earn on its own chain and USDG stablecoin; Robinhood Social, now aiming to own idea generation, not just execution; Robinhood Strategies, managed advisory from $50; and Cortex, an AI research assistant that can also place orders.

The day-trading rule change hasn't landed yet

It took effect June 4, less than a month inside the quarter, and management gave no quantitative data — which suggests no clear read yet. What is visible is margin lending: interest revenue of $216 million, with balances at $21.6 billion, up 128% year over year. To fund that cheaply, Robinhood moved part of its swept cash back onto its own balance sheet as user cash balances, paying users the same rate.

Child accounts are a long option, not revenue

Under-18s with a social security number can receive $5,000 a year in contributions, invested only in specified low-fee index funds, with $1,000 of seed money for children born 2025-28, locked until 18 and converting to a traditional IRA after.

Seven million are registered. Robinhood is paid cost-plus for the app, custody and brokerage — just $25 million recognised this quarter, low margin, no scale effect. The value is retention: if those accounts stay when they convert, Robinhood inherits exactly the young, high-frequency users it wants, at almost no acquisition cost.

Bottom line

Financial discipline held throughout. A 10% headcount cut took the company to 2,998 employees — about 2,500 organic excluding 450 from acquisitions — at a restructuring cost of $23 million. Adjusted EBITDA was $741 million at a 57% margin, and of the $240 million sequential revenue increase, $200 million converted straight into profit. The unavoidable truth is that this is still a beta business — quarterly revenue is under $1.5 billion — so last year's linear extrapolation of a crypto bull market was always going to unwind. What the multi-line build-out supports is simpler: short-term beta, long-term alpha.
