The standard launcher of Android 17 crashes when the 3 button navigation mode.

This problem was not observed before the update to Android 17. I have dug into this issue. So, I'm sharing the information.

Hardware

• Pixel 7a
• Pixel tablet

Mainly investigated on the tablet.

How to reproduce the problem

1. Set the system into the "3-button navigation mode" in the settings.
2. Launch an app.
3. Tap a folder in the navigation bar.

Then, you will see the launcher crash and restart. This problem doesn't appear when you tap the app icon in the navigation bar instead of the folder icon.

If you tap the folder 2 or 3 times, the UI freezes. To recover, you have to lock and then unlock the screen.

Effective workaround

Use the gesture navigation mode.

Ineffective workaround

• Delete the cache of the launcher.
• Delete the data of the launcher.
• System reset and initialization.

Consideration

I have found the navigation mode to be the key issue after I re-initialized and restored the apps to my tablet.

So, there is a chance the problem doesn't occur after the system is initialized but only before restoring the apps.
