Claude config backup
Claude Code has crashed on me twice over the last few weeks (Win Desktop App).
A restart fixed it both times, so I was fortunate. Then it occurred to me that every project I have is in a GitHub repo, and my ~/.claude folder isn't backed up anywhere at all.
That folder is 8 slash commands, 14 sub-agents, 20 skills and a CLAUDE.md I've been tuning for months. It's the only thing making Claude behave like mine instead of out of the box. One dead SSD and it's gone.
Claude reponse on how to handle this is below, but I wanted to see if I am missing anything here
Is there a better way to save Claude config?
Claude response
The obvious fix is git init inside ~/.claude. Don't. Your .credentials.json and .env sit in that folder too, so one git add -A puts your auth token on GitHub. There's a .gitignore answer, but I'd rather my token's safety didn't depend on me not making a mistake at 11pm.
So instead, a script that copies a whitelist out to a separate folder, and that folder is the repo. Nothing gets copied unless I named it.
In: CLAUDE.md, learnings, settings.json, agents/, commands/, skills/, per-project memory.
Out: credentials, .env, 368 MB of session transcripts, 37 MB of plugins I can reinstall.
12 MB. It also refuses to commit if it finds anything key-shaped, which I tested by planting a fake API key in a skill file. It stopped.
