Lock picking, starting with Schlage deadbolt. Is this task in vain?

Hello,

Starting out my new hobby. I happen to have a Schlage deadbolt sitting around not in use. Would this be an impossible and fruitless task for a completely newbie, but a handy newbie?

I know Schlage is in a different class. I have acquired some basic tools.
