I spent three years loving my best friend, never told her, and now I don't know how to explain what happened to me
I don't really know why I'm writing this. Maybe I just need to get it out somewhere because I don't think I've ever properly told anyone the whole story.
I fell in love with a girl in my first semester of college.
At first, it wasn't even something I planned. We became friends, then close friends, and eventually she became my best friend. She was the person I talked to about everything. I was always there for her, and somewhere along the way, without realizing it, I fell completely in love with her.
But I never told her.
Every time I thought about confessing, I'd stop myself.
I was terrified that if she didn't feel the same way, I'd lose her completely. So I convinced myself that having her as my best friend was better than risking our friendship.
Then she got a boyfriend.
I tried to act normal, but honestly, I was insecure as hell. I hated seeing her with someone else, but I also felt like I had no right to be upset because I'd never actually told her how I felt.
I stayed.
I was still her friend. Still listened to her. Still helped her. Still cared about her.
Eventually, in our final year, she and her boyfriend broke up.
And stupidly, I started hoping again.
I thought maybe this was finally my chance.
But there was another thing I didn't fully understand. She was from another town and lived in a PG near our college. Towards the end, she started going back to her hometown more and more.
And then, during our last semester, I finally decided I was going to tell her.
After three years of keeping everything inside, I thought I was finally going to say it.
Except before I could...
she confessed something to me.
She told me she'd found her true love in her hometown.
I don't think I'll ever forget that moment.
Because I had spent three years loving this person, doing everything I could for her, being there whenever she needed me, silently hoping that one day I'd have the courage to tell her.
And when I finally found that courage...
It was already too late.
She had someone else.
It broke me in a way I wasn't prepared for.
My last semester was completely fucked. I couldn't focus properly. I was carrying all these emotions around while pretending everything was fine. I had to watch the person I loved move on while knowing that I had never even given myself a chance.
And the worst part?
I can't even blame her.
She didn't reject me.
She didn't lead me on.
She didn't do anything wrong.
I was the one who never said anything.
I chose friendship because I was scared of losing her.
And in the end, I lost the possibility of ever knowing what could have happened.
Now college is over. I've got a job. Life is moving forward.
And whenever people find out I'm single, they joke around like, "Bro, you have a job now. You should have a girlfriend. How can you still be single?"
Sometimes I just laugh.
Because how do I explain that I spent three years completely in love with someone who was never mine?
How do I explain that I wasn't single because I couldn't find someone?
I was single because emotionally, I was stuck on one person.
I don't regret loving her.
I don't regret being there for her.
But I do regret being too afraid to tell her.
Maybe she would've said no.
Maybe things would've become awkward.
Maybe our friendship would've ended.
But at least I would've known.
Instead, I spent three years protecting a friendship while silently destroying myself.
She's probably going to be a beautiful memory from my college years someday.
But right now, she's still the biggest "what if" of my life.
And I guess that's what hurts the most.
Not that she wasn't mine.
But that I'll never know if she could've been.
