Are lightweight and diamond mangalsutras becoming more popular in 2026?
I've been noticing a change in the way modern mangalsutras are being designed and worn.
Traditional mangalsutras with larger pendants and heavier chains will always have their place, especially for weddings and special occasions. But for everyday wear, I seem to be seeing more interest in lightweight mangalsutras with smaller pendants and diamond detailing.
The main appeal seems to be practicality. A lighter design is easier to wear throughout the day, and a smaller pendant can work with both traditional outfits and Western or office wear.
Diamond mangalsutras are also interesting because they can keep the traditional black-beaded element while giving the overall design a more contemporary look. Recent discussions around mangalsutras show people comparing heavier traditional styles with smaller diamond designs specifically for daily use.
Some styles I think are becoming more appealing are:
- Minimal diamond pendants
- Lightweight gold chains
- Shorter, collarbone-length designs
- Geometric or contemporary pendants
- Gold and diamond combinations
- Traditional black beads with a modern pendant
- Designs that can be worn with both Indian and Western outfits
Personally, I think the biggest change is that people are looking at wearability, not just how impressive the jewellery looks.
If someone is going to wear a mangalsutra every day, factors such as weight, chain strength, clasp quality, gold purity, diamond certification and overall comfort become just as important as the design.
I've also noticed that some buyers prefer having a smaller everyday mangalsutra rather than wearing a heavy bridal piece every day. A recent discussion on r/DesiWeddings had people specifically debating a heavy traditional mangalsutra versus a smaller diamond version for everyday use.
I work with Tritiya Gold & Diamonds, where we focus on lightweight gold and diamond jewellery, so this shift is something I've been paying particular attention to. Our approach is to retain the traditional character of jewellery while making the designs more suitable for modern lifestyles.
