Are microfibre cloths a scam?

Why are microfibre clothes used everywhere to clean surfaces when cotton or linen clothes do the job just fine? For dusting for example everywhere I look the suggested is microfibre, but isn’t it just a marketing tactic? There’s so much plastic and polyester everywhere as it is!
