AIO to my friend’s “useless help”?

👥 friendship

So a few weeks ago I (27F) had a friend (26F) come over to give me company while I was adjusting to being at home alone all day with my baby after my husband had been back a work for a week (I’m definitely an extrovert and thrive off social interactions so this change really hit me hard).

This friend and I actually go back all the way to high school and we were moderately close. She has a 2yr old and at the time of this interaction, my baby was about 5 weeks old. We’re not in each other’s social circles and we don’t keep in touch much but when she was at my baby shower, she made a point about making sure I reach out to others if I’m lonely or need help with housework and she would be more than happy to be one of those people because she knows what it’s like to go through postpartum etc. and she wishes she had more friends at the time who had been through was she was about to go through etc.

However, when she came over, she came with her 2yr old (totally fine and understandable) but it made me a bit on edge because my home is not yet baby/toddler proof as my baby obviously wasn’t mobile yet. Now I know kids will be kids and to expect a 2yr old to behave perfectly is unrealistic but I was more troubled by my friend’s “behaviour” (parenting style) than the child’s.

Essentially, whenever the kid did something that I thought kinda crossed a line and I brought it to her attention, she kinda dismissed it. An example of this is when the kid was outside, he was tipping over small pot plants. I brought this to my friend’s attention by saying “Oh I think [kid’s name] is getting into the pot plants” and she replied with something along the lines of “He’s okay, I brought extra clothes”. The purpose of my comment was to get her to address the situation and stop him tipping over the plants as it was making a mess and essentially killing the plants we had growing in there but she seemed to interpret my comment as something more for her benefit in case she wasn’t okay with him getting dirty. I did then gently explain to her that my husband (who she actually grew up with when they were kids lol) had been working hard to cultivate some seedlings. At that point she went out and cleaned up the mess and redirected her kid (which I appreciated) but there were just constantly little things like that going on during the whole visit (the kid even got a hold of a dishwashing tablet and took a little bite of it but my friend continued to be a bit nonchalant with her supervision even after that).

Now, I was feeding my baby basically the whole time (baby wasn’t really efficient with feeding at that stage yet unfortunately) and I was also trying to get rid off potential mastitis (had to constantly “massage” myself during the feed) so even if I wanted to, I couldn’t easily step in to redirect her kid myself. If you’re wondering why my friend wasn’t perhaps being a little more proactive it’s because she was “helping” by cleaning some dishes (which didn’t really need to be done anyway; there weren’t many and I answered her earlier when she asked if my husband helps and I said he takes care of the dishes every night).

So, I say “useless help” in my title because I actually made it clear to her in my initial message that all I wanted was her company. So what would have actually been helpful is if she came over to chat while properly supervising her kid in my house instead of unnecessarily doing dishes and letting her kid more or less run rampant and, in turn, making me anxious and mentally exhausted instead of “having my cup filled”. So, AIO?
