Mexico: Tax on Scuba Gear?

Hi Divers! I am heading to Cozumel soon for a dive trip, this will not be my first time in Mexico but it will be my first time diving there.

A diving friend mentioned she has been hearing from her community that customs has been targeting dive gear coming into the country and imposing an arbitrary “tax”.

I looked it up, and there seems to be some truth to this? At least there is recent info posted in forums about it. I emailed the booking agent, and she said that happens sometimes when people bring in expensive dive photography gear.

This concerns me because people have been posting that photo gear is ONE of the things they do look for, but it’s happening with regular diving gear. Since the booking agent confirmed that this is somewhat happening (and she has incentive to minimize the issue), I am concerned in general.

Does anyone have any first- or second-hand experience with this issue?
