Strange fill up

Stopped for gas yesterday at a Speedway outside of Huntington W.V,, Pulled up behind a Chevy pickup that was not running. The p.u. driver come out of store, started his truck, and then started putting gas in it. Left it running the whole time he was pumping gas, finished, jumped in and drove off. Is this some secret pick up or W.V. thing I don't know about?
