why are so many punks communists if these regimes banned freedom of expression in the past?

I apologise if this has been discussed before, and I would also like to add that I understand next to nothing about politics, much as I try to research this topic. I also do not want to offend anyone by making this post, and I apologise if I do. I just want to find an answer to this question that has confused me for a long time.

from what I understand, pro-communists want social equality and a system that can offer a good quality of life to absolutely anybody. but realistically, wouldn't freedom of expression (through free speech, music, fashion...) be completely banned as a consequence? if everybody should be the same, then such behaviours that make someone stand out would definitely be removed. I think the flipside of this regime is generally less touched on.

I apologise if I come off as ignorant or stupid, but I really want to educate myself on this topic.
