1970’s or 1980’s Country Car Chase Movie

I probably saw this movie between 1983-1988. it might have been on Laser Disc or even a TV movie. I’m sure I have some of the details wrong but I’m 99% positive it’s not anything well known like Vanishing Point or The Sugarland Express. Here’s what I recall

These two guys are running from the law in a super fast car. I think they are robbing houses but I’m not quite sure. The Sheriff can never catch them but he gets pretty close multiple times. Their car is too fast and they always get to it before the cops get to them. The car is so fast, once they get into the car, they have no chance at catching them.

The ending is what I really remember. The guys pull their car up and do another robbery. Everything appears to be fine and they run back to the car and the Sheriff is laying down in the front seat where they couldn’t see him and blasts one or both of them. The Sheriff had finally figured it he shouldn‘t be chasing the guys and could just wait for them at the car instead

I’ve been trying to figure out what movie this was for the better part of 25 years. Once a year I go on a hunt and always come up empty. I’d really appreciate any help. Thanks!
