feeling regret abt my major and being afraid of life after graduating
I’m starting my second year in the fall, our astrophysics department is small but seems pretty active, Astro courses don’t start till the last two years, and switching majors is basically impossible here once you’ve been admitted.
Maybe I’m just feeding myself negative energy over not being able to switch into engineering (something I wanted to do mostly for career security), but I’m scrolling through all sorts of forums and reading about people with amazing stats getting rejected from every PhD program they applied to, and I’m honestly scared. I didn’t get to do anything significant my first year, and I didn’t get into my school’s research program either. My GPA tanked after I suffered a health issue and had to get emergency surgery at the end of my first year, and I was just skipping lectures left and right (I passed all my classes tho). I feel like I am behind, I don’t have research or significant extracurriculars or an outstanding GPA as of now.
I’m just beating myself up over it because I love this path so much but I don’t want to blame my 17 year old self for making this decision that I can’t do anything to reverse now. I know funding has just been tough in this political environment which might be a factor, but idk how different it will be when it’s my turn, and I don’t want to waste STEM effort on a career that won’t happen for me when I could’ve just done something else from the start before I got admitted and locked into my major. Idk man, any advice? Just wanna hear others experiences honestly :/
