How do people get so many resources to build?

I’m about 35 hours in and I’ve scrolled this sub far too much. As a result I’m feeling like my islands are inferior to everyone else’s which but a large part of that is struggling to gather resources.

I’ve unlocked all islands but have yet to see credits.

Is it easier once you complete the game or does everyone just spend hours farming?
